Hanging speaker holders for ME 203

The main shop class that all Mechanical engineers take at Stanford is ME 203 and I wanted to learn how to TIG weld. Prior to taking the class I had seen a beautiful art piece by Fabrice Le Nezet and wanted to do something similar but functional. Inspired by his hanging concrete cube I decided to make a pair of speaker holders in similar fashion. These holders cradle two full sized bookshelf speakers in a web of steel and are suspended from a milled hardpoint bolted into the ceiling. Rod end bearings connect the holders to the hardpoints which allow for some lateral movement and because I placed a tube inbetween the rod ends and webs of steel, the speakers rotate 360 degrees with a light push. Completed Fall of 2012.

I angled the speakers downwards by 10 degrees to point directly at my ears

A simple jig I made to weld these tubes at the right angles
